What is a credit union?

A credit union is a member-owned cooperative financial institution created to serve its members, not outside shareholders. When you join, you become both a member and an owner.

That difference shapes how credit unions operate. The focus is on service, value, and helping members get more from their money.

Membership is ownership

When you are a member, you are an owner. That is the credit union difference, and it affects the way members are treated and the way services are delivered.

A unique financial institution

A credit union is a financial cooperative. Members pool savings, lend to one another, and own the organization where they save, borrow, and receive financial services.

Volunteers help control costs

Many of the people who help guide the credit union, including credit committees, the supervisory committee, and the board of directors, are unpaid volunteers. That helps keep costs down and keeps the focus on members.

Education and service

One of our major goals is to help members become better consumers by offering guidance that helps them get the most from their money and find the best financial service for their needs.

Satisfied members

Members value the service and favorable rates offered by credit unions, which is one reason credit union members are often among the most satisfied users of financial institutions.

Who can join?

The field of membership consists of one group: teammates of Nucor Corporation and their immediate families.
